A Rare Offering

Not every home has a history.
This one has a legacy.

Originally built in 1892 as the Polk Street Day Home for Working Women's Children, this two-story brick landmark has served Nashville for over a century β€” as a charitable home, a beloved church, and a cornerstone of the Buena Vista community. Now, thoughtfully converted into seven one-of-a-kind residences, it begins its next chapter. Original exposed brick walls, limestone foundations, and terra cotta detailing meet quartz countertops, smart appliances, and modern finishes. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as both a Nashville Historic Landmark and Neighborhood Landmark, this is a building that was deemed too important to lose.

133 Years in the Making

From a charitable mission to care for children of working mothers, to a congregation's spiritual home, to Nashville's most distinctive address.

1891
The Flower Mission
A group of young Nashville women organized the Flower Mission, initially providing flowers and aid to the poor and sick. They quickly recognized a greater need β€” caring for the children of working mothers β€” and began raising funds to build a dedicated home.
1892
The Building Rises
The Flower Mission purchased two lots at the corner of Polk Street and Scott Avenue for $1,300 and constructed a two-story brick building with terra cotta ornamentation at a cost of $4,400. The site was chosen for its proximity to the Buena Vista School and the cotton mills where many mothers worked.
1893
Doors Open
The Polk Street Day Home for Working Women's Children opened in April 1893, initially serving 35 children from 15 months to 13 years old. Classes in sewing, housekeeping, and kindergarten were offered alongside daily meals. By 1909, the home was caring for an average of 45 children daily.
1900s
A Second Wing
A north wing was added, creating a symmetrical façade with matching brickwork, terra cotta detailing, and stone foundation. The building grew to meet the growing needs of the Buena Vista community.
1924
The Junior League
The property was presented to the Junior League of Nashville to benefit their Home for Crippled Children, located nearby on 9th Avenue and Monroe Street.
1930–1965
Cofer's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church
For 35 years, the building served as a house of worship for the Cofer's Chapel congregation. A parsonage was constructed next door in 1952, and the community gathered here for Sunday school rallies, services, and fellowship that defined a generation.
1965–2018
Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church
A second congregation made this building their spiritual home for over 50 years, continuing the tradition of community and gathering that had defined the property since 1893.
1979
National Register of Historic Places
The building was listed as a contributing structure in the Buena Vista National Register Historic District β€” official recognition that this is a building of historical, cultural, and architectural significance to Nashville.
2020
Historic Landmark Designation
The Metro Historic Zoning Commission approved both Neighborhood Landmark and Historic Landmark designations, ensuring the long-term protection of the property as part of an adaptive reuse plan. The original bell tower, terra cotta detailing, and brick masonry were preserved.
